If you're reading this page, you have probably experienced the joy of going to get something out of the glove compartment only to find (after many minutes of creative prying) that your glove box latch has exploded.

Luckily, you have the following things going for you:

  1. A new latch costs less than $20 (U.S.D)
  2. It's easy to change
  3. You can remove the lock cylinder from the old latch and use it in the new one (you'll still be able to lock the damn thing without the need to carry a second or third key).

Step 1:

The latch is held in place by a plastic retainer. To remove it, press against one of the open ends (top side of latch).

Step 2:

Once you have enough room, place a pry-tool between the closed end (bottom) of the retainer and pry the retainer off of the latch.

Step 3:

Note: Before removing the tumbler from the latch assembly, make sure the glove box is Unlocked and mark the rear of the tumbler to aid in re-assembly.

The lock cylinder is held in the latch by two plastic catches that rest under a lip on the rear of the cylinder. To remove the lock, pry the catches out from under the lip and push the cylinder out through the front of the latch assembly.

Step 4:

Before installing the lock cylinder in the new latch, take a moment to clean the cylinder and apply the lubricant of your choice.

Step 5:

Insert the new latch in the opening in the glove compartment door and install the clip.  Then, close the door and install the lock cylinder (in the unlocked position). Take a moment to work the tumbler (lock and unlock) until it operates smoothly.

Congratulations! You're done!
